Qatar · 17 hand-picked cafés
Doha's specialty coffee scene is one of the Gulf's most rapidly evolving, with a cluster of serious third-wave cafes that have emerged largely since 2016 alongside a deeply rooted tradition of Arabic qahwa and the ubiquitous karak chai that defines everyday coffee culture here. Gahwa, the lightly roasted and cardamom-infused Arabic coffee served in small handle-less cups, remains a symbol of Qatari hospitality served in homes, diwaniyas, and heritage venues. Karak, a spiced milk tea borrowed from South Asian tradition and adapted to local taste, is dispensed at low-cost takeaway counters across the city. Third-wave specialty has grown in parallel rather than as a replacement, finding its audience among expatriates, returning Qatari students, and a younger generation that embraces both traditions.
Doha's specialty geography divides into distinct clusters. Msheireb Downtown has become the most concentrated specialty district, with %Arabica, Nomad, The Ministry of Coffee, Profiles by Roastado, Toby's Estate, Earth Roastery, and Café Kitsuné all occupying the regenerated heritage quarter around Barahat Msheireb and the M7 design hub within a walkable radius of the Msheireb metro station. The Pearl-Qatar, the artificial island development in the northeast, hosts a second cluster of waterfront cafes at Porto Arabia including Flat White, PourOver, Zawya, Harvest, and Ben Rahim on adjacent Gewan Island, where the setting blends marina views with specialty brewing. Katara Cultural Village to the north offers a more heritage-inflected context, with Brewed by Mazaji and Kava Koffee embedded among galleries and amphitheatres facing the Gulf. Lusail, Qatar's newest planned city further north, is attracting international names including %Arabica at Place Vendome.
What distinguishes Doha's specialty scene is the coexistence of international pedigree names with genuinely independent Qatari-founded projects. Nomad's focus on Yemeni beans from Port of Mokha, Ben Rahim's synthesis of Arabic and third-wave brewing methods, and Koob's in-house roastery reflect a growing local coffee identity rather than mere imitation of Western models. The city's ambition, its infrastructure investment in places like Msheireb, and the concentration of young, well-travelled residents have compressed what took other cities a decade into a few years of development. The scene remains moderate in total size but punches above its weight in quality and conceptual ambition.
