Nairobi, by the cup
Kenya · 18 hand-picked cafés
Kenya is one of the world's most celebrated coffee origins, producing the SL28 and SL34 varietals that fetch premium prices at auction and consistently score among the highest at international cupping competitions. The country's Central Highlands, including Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, and Embu, sit at elevations between 1,400 and 2,100 metres on the slopes of Mount Kenya, where rich volcanic soils, high altitude, and the two-season rainfall pattern produce a cup character defined by bright malic acidity, blackcurrant and citrus fruit notes, and a full, syrupy body. Nairobi has historically been the administrative and trading hub for this coffee, and the city's cafes increasingly serve as the public face of a supply chain that once exported almost entirely to Europe and the United States.
Nairobi's specialty cafe scene has grown sharply since the early 2010s, moving well beyond the legacy Java House and Artcaffe chains toward a network of independent, roaster-owned cafes that celebrate Kenyan single origins rather than generic blends. The primary café clusters sit in Westlands and its riverside extension along Chiromo and Riverside Drive, in the Kilimani and Lavington residential corridors to the south, and in the leafy Karen suburb to the southwest. Gigiri in the north, home to the United Nations offices and a dense diplomatic community, has developed its own specialty cluster with cafes oriented toward international residents. These neighborhoods share a preference for outdoor seating, garden settings, and unhurried service that suits the city's climate and pace.
What makes Nairobi distinct from other African specialty café cities is the direct proximity to origin. Roasters such as Spring Valley, Barista and Co, Connect Coffee, and Coffee Lab source directly from farms within a few hours' drive of the city, and several operate roasteries where beans land on the counter within days of leaving the drum. The café scene therefore functions as a live tasting room for Kenyan terroir, with SL28 lots from Nyeri and washed Kirinyaga grades appearing on filter menus alongside innovative processing experiments. A growing generation of Kenyan-owned and Kenyan-led businesses, including women-owned cafes like Point Zero, is reshaping who tells the story of Kenyan coffee at home.
