Spain · 32 hand-picked cafés
Barcelona has quietly become one of Europe's most compelling specialty coffee cities. The scene took root in the early 2010s with pioneers like Nomad Coffee, Satan's Coffee Corner, and Cafes El Magnifico, each approaching quality from a different angle: the former from precision sourcing and roasting, the latter from over a century of family craft. By the mid-2020s, the map had spread from El Born and the Gothic Quarter across Gracia, Eixample, Poblenou, El Raval, Sant Antoni, and Poble Sec, with roasters including Three Marks, Right Side, SlowMov, Morrow, Dalston, and Syra all building distinct identities.
The city's third-wave culture is shaped by its design sensibility and neighbourhood character. In Poblenou, converted industrial spaces house cafes inside art venues and plant shops. In Gracia, roasters occupy narrow lanes where regulars linger over V60s. Eixample offers everything from standing espresso bars to all-day brunch institutions. The breadth and quality of what is available today would have been unrecognisable a decade ago.
For coffee travellers, Barcelona rewards exploration beyond the famous names. The smaller roaster-owned cafes, the neighbourhood anchors on quiet plazas, and the newest arrivals opening in 2025 all contribute to a scene that is genuinely world-class. Bring comfortable shoes, an open itinerary, and a willingness to follow a narrow alley to wherever it leads.
