Chiang Mai, by the cup
Thailand · 28 hand-picked cafés
Chiang Mai sits at the centre of one of Southeast Asia's most compelling specialty coffee growing regions. The mountains to the north and northwest, including Doi Inthanon, Doi Chaang, and Doi Saket, produce washed, natural, and honey-processed Arabica lots from hill tribe communities including the Akha, Lahu, and Lisu peoples. What distinguishes the northern Thai scene from other Asian coffee cities is that the supply chain is almost entirely visible: roasters here do not import from afar but drive two hours into the hills to visit cooperatives they have known for years, and many cafe menus name the village or community behind each lot on the board.
The specialty scene clusters most densely in Nimmanhaemin, known locally as Nimman, a grid of tree-lined sois west of the Old City that has been the creative and commercial heart of the city since the mid-2000s. Ristr8to and its sibling Roast8ry set the technical standard on the main road, while a deeper network of roaster-cafes fills the surrounding streets. The Old City moat area, Santitham to the north, and the riverside Wat Ket district to the east each offer a different texture: slower, more residential, and more likely to reward wandering on foot over deliberate planning.
Chiang Mai draws a large population of long-term remote workers, digital nomads, and specialty coffee professionals from across Asia, which has pushed average extraction quality and barista literacy noticeably higher than in comparable Thai cities. The presence of on-site roasters at multiple addresses means visitors can buy fresh northern Thai beans at origin prices and take home a meaningful souvenir. The combination of traceable single origins, technically serious preparation, and a city that is still genuinely affordable makes Chiang Mai one of the strongest specialty coffee destinations in Asia.
