Gothenburg, by the cup
Sweden · 18 hand-picked cafés
Gothenburg has one of the most developed specialty coffee cultures in Scandinavia, built over three decades around roasters who take sourcing as seriously as brewing technique. The Swedish fika tradition, which centres on a deliberate pause for coffee and something sweet, gives the scene its social architecture: cafes here are not transactional spaces but places to linger, talk and return. Da Matteo, founded by Matts Johansson in the 1990s and recognised as Nordics Best Roaster in 2025, established the city's template for specialty roasting, and that foundation attracted a generation of independent operators who pushed into single-origin filter programs, direct-trade sourcing and competition-level barista craft.
The neighbourhoods of Haga and Linne are the most historically cafe-dense areas of the city, with Haga Nygata offering cobblestoned konditori culture and Linne hosting a newer wave of specialty-focused bars. Majorna and Olivedal to the west carry a relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere where cafes tend to combine coffee with local food, plants and a slower pace. The Hisingen side of the water, particularly Kvillebäcken and Lindholmen, is home to Alkemisten and their in-house Ritu roasting project, alongside Morgon Coffee Roasters, whose monthly open-tasting events under a shipyard crane have become a genuine local ritual. Gamlestaden in the east holds Kafferaven Per Nordby, a focused roastery working from the storied Slakthuset complex.
What sets Gothenburg apart from other Nordic coffee cities is the density of independent roasters who are also directly running retail cafes, which means the coffee in the cup is frequently the house product rather than a third-party brand. The city also hosts the Nordic Coffee Fest, reinforcing its position as a host city for serious coffee conversation rather than just a consumer market. The result is a scene that rewards slow exploration on foot, with something worth stopping for in almost every neighbourhood.
