Porto, by the cup
Portugal · 22 hand-picked cafés
Porto's coffee culture is shaped by two currents running in parallel: a deep tradition of strong, inexpensive espresso consumed at neighbourhood counters, and a rapidly growing specialty scene that has expanded from a handful of pioneers in the mid-2010s to dozens of cafes today. The city's compact geography means both traditions coexist on the same block. Porto roasters work primarily with direct-trade lots, roasting in small batches.
The specialty map clusters most densely in Cedofeita and Bonfim. Cedofeita, with its galleries and tree-lined streets, drew the first wave of third-wave cafes. Bonfim sits just east and has developed a quieter identity around its microroasters, with a grittier neighbourhood feel. Foz do Douro near the Atlantic added a roastery in 2024, while the Baixa and Ribeira hold the heritage landmarks.
What makes Porto's scene distinctive from Lisbon's is the density of in-house roasting within the city itself, giving Porto a genuine farm-to-cup infrastructure rather than a network reliant on imported roasts. A visitor spending two or three days focused on coffee can cover a different neighbourhood roaster each morning without repeating a cup.
