Italy · 15 hand-picked cafés
Venice has one of the most storied coffee histories in the world. Caffe Florian opened in 1720 and Gran Caffe Quadri in 1775, making Piazza San Marco the address of two of the oldest operating coffee houses on earth. For most of the city, coffee culture remains resolutely traditional: a quick espresso standing at the bar, prices kept low. The historic cafes on the piazza are the exception, where the tariff reflects the gilded interior and the orchestra.
The specialty coffee scene in Venice is small and honest. A handful of places take single-origin sourcing seriously, including Caffe del Doge near the Rialto and Farini, a bakery and coffee operation with central locations. The genuine roasting tradition is kept alive by family businesses such as Torrefazione Cannaregio and Caffe Girani, both roasting on-site with vintage equipment.
For navigation: San Marco holds the grand historic cafes. Dorsoduro clusters around Campo Santa Margherita. Cannaregio is where locals drink coffee near the fondamenta. Castello and San Polo hold the specialty-forward options. The city's compact size means most are walkable from any central point.
