Athens is one of Europe's most serious specialty coffee cities, a fact that surprises visitors who arrive expecting only thick Greek coffee brewed in a briki. Since Taf Coffee opened on Emmanouil Benaki Street in 2009, the city has cultivated a dense ecosystem of micro-roasteries, competition-trained baristas, and neighbourhood cafes that stretch from Monastiraki and Psyrri through Pangrati and Koukaki to Exarcheia and Kypseli.
Greece's deep coffee culture, built on generations of slow freddo espresso and afternoon conversation, has proved fertile ground for third-wave thinking. Many of Athens' most celebrated specialty operators, including The Underdog, Samba, Handpickers, Omsom, and Anana, source directly from farms and compete nationally and internationally, with several Hellenic Barista and Brewers Cup champions running their own shops around the city.
The result is a specialty scene that rewards exploration by neighbourhood: Thisio and Koukaki offer proximity to ancient sites and emerging food culture; Pangrati combines competition-grade bars with relaxed brunch terraces; Exarcheia runs the gamut from century-old roasters to radical naturals specialists; and Kypseli, Athens' most culturally layered district, hosts a growing cluster of locals-only finds that reflect the neighbourhood's warmth and diversity.
