Amsterdam, by the cup
Netherlands · 35 hand-picked cafés
Amsterdam has been quietly building one of Europe's most serious specialty coffee cultures since the mid-2000s, when Espressofabriek and Bocca Coffee first brought third-wave thinking to a city better known for its brown cafes. Today the scene spans multiple generations of roasters: founding names like Bocca and Lot Sixty One, who shaped the language of Dutch specialty coffee, alongside a younger cohort from Friedhats, Stooker, and Rum Baba who are pushing sourcing and brewing further.
The geography of the city shapes how coffee is consumed. De Pijp rewards slow morning cafe-hopping, with Scandinavian Embassy and CT Coffee anchoring the neighbourhood's reputation as Amsterdam's most café-dense district. Oost has become the roaster's quarter, home to Stooker's Kastanjeplein roastery, Coffee Bru's Beukenplein terrace, and Rum Baba's micro-roastery and free weekly brewing workshops. Oud West, Jordaan, and the canal belt fill in a map dense enough to spend a full week crossing between filter bars and espresso counters.
What distinguishes Amsterdam from other European specialty cities is the transparency culture: White Label, Screaming Beans, and Bocca all publish full supply-chain information, and several cafes run public cupping sessions. The result is a scene built as much on education as on aesthetics.
